True Story Tuesday - Here's Your Sign!

Welcome to True Story Tuesday! Where you get to tell embarrassingly true stories that you wouldn't hardly believe except you know they are true!!!

Okay. You REALLY wouldn't think signs like this would be necessary, would you? APPARENTLY SO. This is not by our house, but still on Route 292, the road we live on. HOWEVER, we NEEDED it in front of our house.

See this lovely truck?
Well, they needed the above pictured sign. Because they attempted to drive through THIS:
Granted, the water wasn't quite up that high yet, but ABSOLUTELY high enough where most normal people would not have attempted to drive through it unless it was life or death. And it didn't seem to be. Life or death, that is.

See, our lovely Saturday evening was going rather calm. Chester ran down on his scooter to check up on the water level down the road. (Read previous post for education on "Strange Hillbilly Flood Behavior.") Thank God he did, or these two silly men would have probably floated off trying to rescue their truck alone. Plus one seemed to be, how to say it gently, high as a kite. Didn't help matters much, to say the least.

Here we are, our little flood party crew, chowing down on hot dogs and brownies and such, and here comes Chester yelling (well, yelling for Chester. He is kinda a quiet guy compared to the rest of us.) about a truck that is in the water and something about some people. Mind you we do not fully comprehend if these people are alive, floating, out and safe but trying to save their truck, etc. He takes off across the bottom to Uncle Troy's garage to grab some gear to go help the people, and all the men folk jump up and start getting stuff too. Chains, rope, etc. My dad had went home already, but he heard the commotion and stepped out and my sister yelled at him and gave him a brief update and he took off, too, on the hunt for rescue items as well. Uncle Troy and Chester took off in the truck, and stopped to pick up my dad. Herman, another neighbor who was eating dinner with us, ran down to his house for stuff too, and he rode down on his scooter behind them. My sister said, "Did Dad (Homer) have anything?" My mom replied, "Yeah, a rope or something." To which my Aunt Susie replied, "OH NOOOO!" at the thoughts of my dad with rope! LOL Go here for "Homer Mishaps" and you will see why this was such a worry to her! She admitted a while back she used to say a prayer every time she heard an engine or tool of any type start up over at our house! LOL So here we are, laughing at my dad, at Chester running across the bottom, at how much rope and chain these men are taking with them, enough to pull up the Titanic, we decide, and ALL THE WHILE we don't even know if these people are safe or not! How pathetic is that? Not that we weren't concerned, don't get me wrong, we just couldn't believe all this was happening SO FAST. To make matters funnier worse, Herman had to go back to his house to get something, and here he goes, all 35 miles per hour on his little scooter, all hunched over like he is trying to make it go faster or something, and we just burst out laughing. "He looks like a 90 year old man in a motorized wheelchair!" (Well, he did. Except he doesn't look 90.) We hear whirring and digging, engines grinding and all kinds of commotion from down the road. A couple minutes later, Lonzo, yet another neighbor, comes back to tell us the truck is out and everyone is okay. The truck was all but COMPLETELY under. All that was sticking out was a little bit of the tail gate and a little bit of one corner of the main top of the truck, where it was floating and bobbing in the river. If it hadn't been for that much, they would not have been able to get the ropes and chains attached.

The people try to get their truck started, (even though all the men tell them it is pointless at this current time) with no such luck. They walk back to my aunt's house to use her phone to try to get a hold of someone. Well, duh, it is like this ALL over the county, so no one can get out for very far without running into a water road block. Well, we surely don't want these high people (well, person and other dude) to spend the night, so my uncle drives them through the upper water (which hadn't reached its "full potential" yet) to take them to some of their relatives house. They made it to their family's house and who knows from there! Shew. Can't folks just enjoy a flood?

The next day, when we all went walking around to look at the water, (again, check post on "Hillbilly Behavior") Susie and I just couldn't resist taking a look at the truck that caused all our excitement the evening before.

Curiosity got the best of us and we opened the door as well. We didn't touch anything, but just looked. It was covered in mud and God knows what else from the river.

Their windshield is also cracked all the way across the front.

From this view you could not even tell anything was wrong with it, except maybe it needed washing!

In all seriousness, SEVERAL people in our surrounding area lost vehicles, homes, had severe damage to their homes, even schools suffered great damage. I know of one volunteer fire fighter that suffered and died from a heart attack, but do not know at this time if there were any more flood related deaths. Please keep these flood victims in your prayers.

Floods are so scary (as evidenced by my multiple FREAK OUT posts back in January, LOL)

but dumb and dumber out there trying to get their truck to float them home... now that's just not smart!

I'll bet the 2 stoners didn't know what to think....
They probably just they wanted to get away from all those helpful christan people...

If I hadn't been there and actually saw all that was going on, your description would have made it almost visible in a person's mind. Great job, Lisa. You always seem to have the right words and right level of excitement to enable your readers to just practically visualize exactly what was going on. If it had not been so serious, it would have been halarious.....

Lisa -

Thanks SO MUCH for catching that I forgot to put comment moderation on the scavenger hunt... DOH! I enabled it and deleted your comment so no one could take your answers. I still have your comment saved though - so I have all your answers :) Thanks again... I'm such a dork!

And by the way... clicking on your picture won't take me to your profile anymore... I'm glad I had your blog address saved or I wouldn't have been able to get to it.

Have a GREAT day!

(By the way - my word verification was ANEUS... wow... what 3rd grader is sitting on the other end giggling???)
